Web design myths & good web design rules

Here you can find common (but wrong) opinions about making websites and designing the web. I will try to explain why - in my opinion - it is not true and I will also give cogent arguments. I hope it will make clear why my work is better then the work of non-professionals.

Myth 1: Web design is all about skill and routine!

No. Skill and routine is - of course - a part of every human activity which leads to something good and well-made. However, a movie is not good because of a cutting edge picture and sound, and a novel is not good because it is grammatically correct. In the same way, web pages are not good because they just "work". Without an aesthetic design it's just a code without any spirit.

Myth 2: All pages should be the same!

No. It is preferable to copy a few principles which make sense and keep the website well-arranged, however, cloning of web pages makes no sense. And in the future you will remember the website which was interesting and had an idea behind it and not a website which was dull. Dullness is destined to be forgotten.

Myth 3: Today e-shops are free - why should I pay!

No. Open-source and free stuff is a good idea - I also use many open-source projects. But when you decide to use it, keep in mind that the whole work doesn't end by downloading a free e-shop. The work starts there! And it is not certain that the template or e-shop is what you exactly need.

Myth 4: Everything on the web should blink and move!

No. We go to a website because we need some information. If every page on the web opens with a 10 second delay because an animation is shown and every link comes back 10 times before it allows us to go to another page, we will go to another website where we will find the information more quickly. And one thing for all: a lot of movement distracts us from reading and thinking.

Myth 5: Quality of the text doesn't matter. Pictures do!

No. It is true that pictures are an important part of every website - without pictures web pages would be very simple and sad. But the emphasis is on the text because from the text we get the most important thing - the information. If the site is ridiculously written or contains nonsense, no pictures will save it.

Myth 6: As many pictures as possible!

No. Pictures certainly have their function on the website: they illustrate the topic, they sometimes give some information, and they make the composition of the page. Yet everything that exceeds that is useless and purposeless.

Myth 7: Everybody can be a web designer!

No. Everybody can download a free program which makes websites "easily in 10 minutes". If you believe that, I will not argue with you. But without deep knowledge of html code, graphics, programming, and also making and adjusting photographs, aesthetics etc. your "product" will be very substandard or won‘t exist because it doesn’t work.

I offer professionalism in the full sense of the word!
